The art of engraving has a very long history and is one of the traditional arts of Iran. It is also categorized as industrial art and metalwork. This precious and beautiful art that expresses the culture and civilization of Iran, was first seen as sculptures on mountains and the building stones of palaces of kings and other historical buildings, dating back to the time of cave-dwellers. Later on, the art of sculpture was turned into engraving and then Ghalam Zani, and designs and images were transferred from the stones of buildings and the bodies of mountains to precious stones, especially agate.

Eventually, metals such as gold, silver, copper, brass, and steel became the main background for these beautiful designs and lines, and "Ghalam Zani" was developed, which is the art of creating lines and patterns with a pen or hammer on metal objects. Shiraz’s Ghalam Zani is one of the best handicrafts in our country, which is designed and produced by experienced artists of the city. Shiraz’s engraving style is slightly different from other styles in different cities and has its own unique designs.

In a Nutshell

Shiraz Ghalam Zani is a unique style known as Shirazi design and not only because of the special style and method of implementing the design, but also because of its great similarity to the ancient styles. Engraving can be done on copper, brass, and other metals.
