Khatam is the art of decorating or covering the surface of wood or copper with small triangles in the form of mosaics. The smaller the size of these triangles and the more precisely they are placed next to each other, the greater the value of the Khatam. Shiraz, next to Isfahan, is the center of Iranian khatam (inlay) work. Shiraz inlay is one of the special arts of this city. The specific style that is used in its production distinguishes this art from that of other cities. In fact, the Khatam artist has mastered several forms of art, such as inlay, miniature, engraving, carpentry, and so on.
The first stage of Shiraz inlay production is cutting wood in different colors with dimensions of a length of 30 and a diameter of 1 to 2.5 mm and creating suitable triangles for the desired design. Using a razor, they fit all the sides for the desired design. They change the color of existing woods with the help of chemical dyes to preserve the variety of colors such as yellow, black, and red.
Art is an integral part of Shiraz, manifested in different parts of this lovely city. One of them is inlay or Khatam, which is made by putting regular and delicate pieces of wood together in different colors. This art can be made of wood, ivory, bone, rice, and gold.
